New Bohemia Sign Painting Course

James Roy Thomas contacted us a few months back with an impassioned email about his desire to learn the traditional art of making hand painted signs. We get a lot of emails like this. Sometimes it sticks, but too often people get excited and then their excitement fizzles once they realize how much work and commitment its going to take to actually learn the craft. Well, I have to hand it to James, he is still plugging away after months of daily practice and just returned from one of the sign painting courses offered by the modern masters at New Bohemia Signs in San Francisco. You will be seeing more from James Roy here on TSM as he helps to document his journey into the craft.

In the meantime, here are some pics as well as a short intro from James:

I took a little vacation last weekend in San Francisco and had the opportunity to take a few classes at New Bohemia Signs. New Bohemia Signs is owned by Damon Styer. Damon and his staff instructed us on some basic casual and gothic alphabets and brush stroke techniques on the first day. The second day we painted our own designed signs and put our brush strokes to work. I wanted to do a sign that said tattoo, but with different fonts. So I decided to use Goldrush Tattoo as my sign design. I need tons more practice and research but I think its a decent start. The instruction was great to have and now I have something to work with and practice.

It’s awesome to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed
information. Excellent read! I’ve saved your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to
